Contemporary Maori Design

It's interesting to see the myriad of ways in which Maori design can be viewed. From media, icons, film, language influences- Maori art & design is developing in exciting ways. Maori culture & identity is relevant to popular culture- more so today than possibly it has ever been in the past.

Real Aotearoa is a branch of New Zealand Post. It targets the tourist market & recognises that Maori culture is an important part of creating a point of difference within NZ brand identity. Designworks created this branding to be associated with the All-blacks & with a unique NZ identity (I worked at NZ Post & managed the inventory & online distribution of the 'Real' products).

Here is a look at several examples of works that use or are influenced by Maori design. Also included are people or popular culture icons that influence Maori identity. This is my way of starting a dialogue concerning Maori design, art & identity.
