Maori Design for Real Whanganui Festival

Takarangi- this graphic icon represents the carving design takarangi. Individual elements of a design convey certain meaning. In whakairo, knowledge of the carved pattern, as a unit of design, is traditionally acquired by carvers and is thus adapted to suit artistic expression. The interpretation of my design uses it as a two dimensional graphic where it is normally a three-dimensional carved form— consequently, it appears ‘dislocated’ from the continuous stream of signifiers in carved visual language. Meaning behind my design: each arm of the spiral has twelve sets of four connectors bridging the arms. These twelve sets represent the twelve heavens in Maori cosmology. The four fingers between the arms signify the four gods (Tane-Mahuta, Tawhirimatea, Tangaroa and Tumatauenga) responsible for the separation of Ranginui (sky-father) and Papatuanuku (earth-mother) symbolised as the main interlocking arms of the spiral. This separation allowed knowledge & light to enter the world. In the context of the Real Whanganui Festival, I would like to see this takarangi spiral symbolise a celebration of artistic achievement & a sharing of knowledge between cultures.
